Sena 2014 is a premium Chilean red wine from the Aconcagua Valley, renowned for its Bordeaux-style blend with a distinctive Chilean identity and a powerful tannic structure.
Origin and Harvest Context
Sena is a project created in 1995 by Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi with the ambition of producing a world-class wine, appreciated among the Premiers Crus. The 2014 vintage underwent a difficult spring with a late frost impacting the number of bunches, followed by slowed vegetative growth. Ripening was slow and well-balanced, thanks to falling temperatures in February-March, promoting great aromatic finesse and a massive tannic structure.
Varieties and Blend
The 2014 is a typical Bordeaux blend, consisting mainly of:
60% Cabernet Sauvignon
16% Carménère
11% Malbec
8% Merlot
5% Petit Verdot
These varieties come from sterile and stony soils, with separate fermentations and aging of about 22 months in new French barriques at 67%, and a small percentage in new Stockinger foudres, bringing elegance and finesse to the wine
Sensory Profile and Tasting
The wine presents a deep ruby red color with crimson reflections. Its bouquet is extremely complex with aromas of red fruits (raspberry, cherry), notes of cedar, bay leaf, dill, subtle tobacco, anise, accompanied by delicate touches of cocoa and clove. On the palate, it is rich, concentrated, and full-bodied with young but silky tannins, a long and refined finish. It offers beautiful tension, great depth and remarkable aromatic intensity. Critics note ripe fruity flavors combined with a mineral elegance and Asian spices, with a balanced structure that allows for significant aging potential.
Additional Information and Expert Notes
The production volume is about 60,000 bottles for this vintage.
James Suckling awarded 97/100 to the 2014 cuvée, Robert Parker 95/100, and Wine Spectator 92/100, thus highlighting its exceptional quality. Its bottle aging can last several years, with a favorable evolution provided it is kept in a good cellar
For a purchase or tasting, Sena 2014 is an emblematic wine that combines power and elegance, perfectly representative of the Chilean terroir of Aconcagua.
